Overview

Clinical rotas arrive as dense spreadsheets that every doctor manually re-types into their calendar — then re-types again when the rota inevitably changes. Having lived this as a doctor, I built AutoRota to make the rota itself the thing you interact with.

AutoRota imports a rota in seconds, syncs it live to your calendar, and lets you customise shifts and print clean views. It's built with Next.js and TypeScript, with a React Native companion app in development.

Why this problem

Domain knowledge is the moat here. Rota spreadsheets are wildly inconsistent between hospitals, shift codes are local dialects, and the pain points — swaps, last-minute changes, contract compliance — are invisible unless you've worked the shifts yourself. Being both the builder and the user meant the roadmap wrote itself.

What's next

The roadmap centres on collaboration: conversational rota updates, syncing with friends' rotas to find shared free time, structured shift swaps, and automatic checking of rotas against contract rules — turning AutoRota from a personal utility into the place a cohort of doctors coordinates.
